Your Guide To When To Have Maternity Photos Taken
We've all heard that quote from Greek philosophy that "the only constant changes," and that is especially true when you're carrying a growing bundle of joy. In the midst of the daily changes of your pregnancy, when should you be scheduling your maternity photo session to capture the magic of maternity before it’s over? As a specialized maternity photographer who has helped countless moms create stunning maternity portraits, allow me to offer my advice.
When to Take Maternity Photos
The short answer is that you want to take your maternity photos between 30 weeks and 36 weeks into your pregnancy, and there’s a reason for that specific window. By this time, your baby bump has grown to nearly its full size, so you can highly all the beauty of your pregnant shape in your photos. At the same time, you're typically not yet so close to giving birth that you're too uncomfortable to enjoy your photo session and feel like the gorgeous mom-to-be you are.
When to Schedule Maternity Photos
Knowing that you want your maternity photoshoot to take place between 30 weeks and 36 weeks, how far in advance do you need to book your appointment in order to get the timing you want?
I suggest aiming to book your maternity session around 24 weeks into your pregnancy, as my schedule is often booked a month or two in advance. With that being said, if you're far beyond 24 weeks and you don't want to miss the opportunity for maternity portraits, it's always worth reaching out to find out if I have availability. You never know when I might have a cancellation or an opening in my schedule, and I'd be happy to help you capture the beauty of your pregnancy.
When to Start Planning Your Maternity Photos
Truly, it's never too early to start dreaming about your maternity photos and gathering ideas for portraits you love. In fact, as soon as you confirm your pregnancy, you can have fun with these planning steps:
- Browse maternity portraits to get an idea of what you like.
- Shop around for maternity photographers in your area, browsing their portfolios to get a feel for their styles and whether they align with the aesthetic you want.
- Start gathering ideas for any special requests you might have for your session, like meaningful mementos you want to incorporate or specific locations where you want to take your photos.
Once you've booked your maternity session, you can move on to these planning steps:
- Meet with your photographer for a consultation.
- Start deciding what you'd like to wear for your photos. I have a client closet full of luxurious couture gowns, silks, and accessories for your use, and you can browse the closet at your consultation to start choosing your favorites. Of course, you're always welcome to bring your own outfits too. I recommend highly stretched pieces, as getting a precise fit at this point in your pregnancy can feel like trying to hit a moving target.
- Plan outfits for your significant other or your kids if you would like to include them in your photo session.
- Gather ideas for your hair and makeup so you're ready to get glammed up by my professional hair and makeup artist before your session.
